My friend asked me in an email recently, what I thought about "ClimateGate". I was curious so I looked into it and found out that apparently some controversial emails were leaked that call into question the data behind all those "hockey stick" charts Al Gore and the like point to. This has caused quite a stir on the 'net. Here's my take:
It hasn't changed my mind about the times we live in. I think
scientific research should be open, and data accessible under scrutiny of others, and it looks as though this isn't always the case. Timing is right for this, making a controversy leading up to Copenhagan.
I personally think we've passed the tipping point on global warming. Once the permafrost thaws the methane contained inside will be released causing a rapid acceleration of warming. I think this is inevitable for several reasons. China is continuing to expand their economy at about 9% per year. (Recently over a hundred miners were killed in an over-stressed coal mine). India is adding over a million cars to their roads per year. Copenhagan won't bring nations together to fight climate change - too many self interests at the table. I have no faith in international treaties.
